Explore Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle which was formally named by the Portuguese as “Cabo Corso”, which meaning “short cape”, was built in 1555 to house slaves. In fact, it was the last memory slaves had of their homeland before being shipped off across the Atlantic, never to return again.

The Cape Coast Castle which now serves as a museum aims to educate its visitors about the advent of Europeans to Africa and their interactions with the local communities and the Central Region in general. Visitors can view maps of slave trade routes and look at examples of the objects which were traded in for slaves – such as glass beads, whisky bottles, guns, ceremonial drums, shackles from the slave trade and ancient pottery. Representations of the hold of a ship, as well as slave dungeons, have been constructed to simulate for guests a tiny part of the experience of the enslaved.

The major purpose of this tour is to bring people closer to the culture and heritage of Ghana. We will also experience the awesomely beautiful Kakum Forest. This tour also focuses on Museums and famous landmarks in Ghana like the Black Star Square. For those interested in the political background and development of Ghana, this is the tour for you.
